What's in a Name | Strong & Short Girl Names
For this week’s What’s in a Name? series, I’ve chosen to feature names that I see as everlasting. Strong, no-nonsense, of-the-Earth type names. No frills… just durable classic names. These also all work nicely together as first/middle name or sib-set combos. Check out the tag below to read more of my name lists!
Ivy
A classic English name with a botanical vibe. It may be floral, but it is far from delicate. Only 3 letters and 2 syllables, this one has spunk. In ancient history, Greek couples would give each other wreaths of ivy to symbolize their faithfulness to each other. There is an eternal feeling around Ivy with emphasis on strength and growth.
Jane
Maybe once dowdy and common, this name now evokes a ‘cool’ laissez-faire attitude. Almost a little high fashion and rock n’ roll. For a simple name, it packs a lot of personality. Middle name suggestion: Grey. While Lady Jane Grey is a sad historic figure in the British royal family, don’t let her tragic ending influence the cool vibe that Jane Grey gives.
Rose
A very feminine garden name. The rose is arguably the most beautiful, fragrant and diverse flower in most gardens. Some are delicate and need pampering, and some are hardy and need very little coddling. Though typically a middle name (in fact, I chose it for my second), it is a great first name as well. How sweet does Baby Rosie sound?
Olive
The olive branch is a symbol of peace and historically the olive wreath was used in celebrations of success. While Olivia remains a very trendy choice (in fact, one of the most popular), Olive is a cool and quirky alternative. Another desirable botanical name. Nature lends itself to the most calming names.
Thora
If you want to exude strength, look no further. Thora is a norse origin name meaning “Thunder Goddess” (feminine version of Thor). The name certainly comes across softer than what it might suggest. As beautiful as similar popular names Cora, Flora & Nora. Growing up I loved Thora Birch, so this name will always have a soft spot in this 90’s girl’s heart.
Example of combinations: Ivy Jane, Jane Thora, Rose Olive, Olive Jane, Thora Rose.
