A Very Vintage Christmas
I cherish nothing more than the Christmas traditions and trinkets passed down to us from our family. The little snippets and throwbacks to my childhood Christmas or Jakob’s (and in some cases, our parent’s) give our home the nostalgic vibe we all seek at this time of year. There is no doubt we each collect things available on the shelves today to help fill out, modernize and personalize our holiday decor, but I am forever seeking the things that “new” can’t capture. Patina, gentle wear & tear, signs of yesteryear and flashbacks to holidays celebrated by families from all walks of life. Whenever I get my hands on a vintage holiday piece I reflect on where those people are today and what their childhood Christmas memories entailed.
Anyway - I thought I’d share some links for some holiday vibes I am shopping right now. Hopefully you’ll find something that resonates, brings back a distant memory or inspires you to shop for your own household!
silver trays & bowls
There are so many uses for these trays and they will carry you all year long. Come December, use them to serve cocktails (a round of hot chocolates or rum & egg nogs?), create an advent with 4 candles, display seasonal treats and chocolates, pearled Bosc pears or Orange Pomander Balls.
Tree trimmings
Vintage tree ornaments are what make me the most curious and nostalgic for complete stranger’s Christmas’s. Especially when they are sold as a ‘lot’. Whenever I come across a box of vibrant glass baubles from the 1960’s I immediately feel connected to my parents childhood’s. I imagine the 1960’s had some raging good times though December. It’s a mix of excitement with sadness when I find an entire collection for the previous owners of these boxes, as those who inherited them did not see the value in hanging on to them. We all have our reasons, and that makes me sad in a way, too. This is the dichotomy of antique shopping.
Needlepoint, mercury glass, wood, metal, satin, figurines, knit… the possibilities are endless.
