Elephant-ing Around

Louella is always so patient with mum and her camera. There are a lot of things that are a heck of a lot more fun than being propped up and posing, but she always gives me face.

I am so in love with this little romper I bought from Rally Co (Hi Aspen!) hand made in linen by a local momma (Rain People). When Louella was first born (and I mean literally first born, a few hours after she came into the world, I was learning to breast feed at 3am while she cluster fed and shopping on my iPhone in the dark hospital room) I bought large quantities of nice, but factory made, baby clothes primarily from Zara. Still love Zara so much, don't get me wrong.

But there is something really special about spending a bit more money and supporting artists and makers. These pieces cost a bit more but I look at them as 'heirloom' pieces, to be passed down and standing the test of time. They are still a fraction of the price of mum's closet, let's be real! Though, in my defence, I've been wearing staple pieces in my closet for 7+ years. I have designer purses, but I own only 2. I carry them for 10 years. I buy 'forever pieces' for me, but Louella will not 'forever' be in size 6 months. I'll just have to make more baby girls. Easy.

I bought this little elephant almost as soon as I found out I was pregnant last April. April is a pretty fantastic month in my life. It is the anniversary of when my husband and I went on our first date. It's an 'in between season' month, my favourite. A month full of promise of change. I found out I was pregnant when I got home from LA. Despite 'actively' trying to get pregnant, I was still utterly shocked.

We went off of birth control right before our wedding in September. Months went by with no sign of pregnancy - by no stretch a long time to wait, but we were keen to grow our family as soon as possible. When we bought our 2 acre lot in January, I said to Jakob that I wanted to wait until next year to get pregnant, once the house was done. As soon as I took the pressure off of my body to conceive, it did. So, voila. My baby was created in a calm, relaxed mum body. One that shockingly carried through to labour and delivery. Through my pregnancy I was violently ill every single day until she was born. Somehow I had managed the strength to keep up with my social life, run my real estate business, and build a home from scratch (with a Maui trip to keep me centred). Women are resilient creatures.
